Kids not the only ones in need of a safety net

For almost a year, Sister Leang brought food and a caring heart to an elderly man in Kratie. Someone cared about him until the day he died.

Endangered children were the first ones who came to mind in 2005, when we set our organization into motion.  For sure, we’ve fretted over the malnourished, mistreated, and neglected young ones. We’re finding, though, that the very old can also be quite vulnerable.  The elderly can also be the ones to quickly suffer when things go wrong. At the urging of our Cambodian partner, Chenda, we’ve decided that in 2022, we will make a special effort to look after older folks who have no safety net.

Recently, Chenda wrote: “An urgent assistance: We have contributed to help an older man named Leng living on the street (homeless). His wife died long years ago, and he had one daughter but he did not know where she was. He lived on the street in Kompong Cham area. This old man survived by neighbor who sometime give food to him. We and others contributed funds to set up a small 3m x 3m home for him.”

Neighbors began keeping an eye on 77- year- old Mr. Leng.

WGLO contributed toward building him a teeny-but-nice new home.

WGLO-Cambodia representative, Chenda, recently visited Mr. Leng at his new home, dropping off groceries.

Our Kratie Province project coordinator, Leang, has identified a number of older folks in in the Sambo District in need of basic care. Leang will visit Mr. Uon (below) and 86-year-old Grandma Pen on a regular basis and will deliver a monthly supply of food.

For sure, we will continue keeping a careful eye out for children who find themselves disadvantaged or at the back of the line. I think we can serve both old and young.
