Okhabol, Cambodia
A beautiful village that you’ll never stumble on by accident.
Okhabol, our newest and most remote project site is located in Kratie Province, Cambodia. To get there you literally drive to the end of the road and get out of your vehicle. From here, you must walk, ride a bike, or use a moto on undeveloped roads and across rickety bridges until you reach the village. There you encounter shy children, uncertain of unfamiliar pale faces but easily coaxed to grins and laughters with play and interaction.
Villagers have requested help in constructing a new classroom building in Okhabol. We’ve requested word from regional authorities to determine government building plans. The pandemic, we fear, has put those sorts of projects on indefinite hold.
During these pandemic times, the most pressing challenge in Okhabol seems to be ensuring adequate nutrition. Leang (WGLO field representative) identified 50 struggling families in need of food assistance. A supply of basic foodstuffs, enough for a small family for one month, was purchased in Phnom Penh and Kratie.
Each family received 66 lbs. rice, 2 lb. white beans, soy sauce, fish sauce, and laundry soap (adding greens from their own gardens). Colorful kramas (traditional scarves) were also distributed.
Getting the food to Okhabol posed the biggest hurdle. The road to Okhabol was impassable, so everything was unloaded at a teacher's house outside the village. Villagers came to the house, toted the foodstuff down to boats on the Mekong River, traveled upriver, unloaded the food, and carried everything (one kilometer distance) to the village.
